[98] Now the story relates that when King Arthur saw Mordred returning in flight through the city of Camelot with so few companions, he was amazed how this could be. He asked those who were coming towards him why they were fleeing.
âMy Lord,â said a boy, âI have bad news to tell you and all those present here. My Lord, I have to tell you that of all the knights that were leading the queen to the fire only three have escaped. One of them is Mordred and I do not know who the other two are; I think all the others are dead.â
âAh!â said King Arthur, âwas Lancelot there, then?â
âYes, my Lord,â he replied, âand that is not all he has done, because he has rescued the queen from death and taken her away with him. He has disappeared with her into the forest of Camelot.â
The king was so shaken by this news that he did not know what to do. At this point Mordred came in and said to the king:
âMy Lord, things have gone badly for us. Lancelot has got away and taken the queen with him, after defeating us all.â
âThey will not be able to go much further, if I can help it,â said the king.
Then he commanded knights and sergeants and all those who were with him to arm, and they mounted as soon as they could. They left the city covered in steel, rode up to the forest, and went up and down to see if they could get any news about the people for whom they were searching. But, as it happened, they found no one. The king then suggested they should divide and go different ways in order to find them more easily.
